Koh Tao is where young travellers go to get certified, stay longer than planned, and make friends they'll have for years. The dive school scene is exceptionally social, most shops have accommodation and bars attached, and evenings naturally evolve from debrief to dinner to dancing. Koh Phangan and its Full Moon Party are one ferry ride away. This is not a quiet nature retreat; it is a very good time.

Koh Tao punches above its weight as a learn-to-dive destination rather than a world-class big-animal site. The reefs have healthy hard coral, resident turtles, and a reliable cast of reef fish, triggerfish, moray eels, pufferfish, parrotfish, and small reef sharks. The headline animal is the whale shark, which visits Chumphon Pinnacle and Sail Rock seasonally. What Koh Tao really offers is confidence-building: warm, calm water, patient instructors, and sites genuinely calibrated for divers at every early stage of the sport.

Submerged rock between Koh Tao and Koh Phangan with a vertical chimney swim-through. Glassfish inside, barracuda above, and occasional whale sharks. The best dive in the area.

The deepest, most exposed site near Koh Tao, barracuda schools, big-eye trevally, and occasional whale sharks. Best pelagic diving in the area; cancelled in rough conditions.
Depth5–30 m
Series of submerged pinnacles with schooling fish, resident reef sharks, and large grouper. The most consistently rewarding reef dive on the Koh Tao circuit.
Depth3–14 m
Shallow coral garden between Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan, ideal for beginners and snorkellers. Turtles, anemonefish, and moray eels in calm water. Excellent night dive too.
Depth5–22 m
Boulders and coral at Koh Tao's south tip with resident blacktip reef sharks, grouper, and turtles. Accessible for OW divers and popular for underwater photography.
Fly to Koh Samui (USM, direct from Bangkok and Singapore) or Surat Thani (URT, main budget hub), then ferry to Koh Tao (2–3 hr from Surat Thani, 1.5 hr from Koh Phangan). Night train from Bangkok to Chumphon + ferry is the classic budget option ($15–25 total). Overnight bus + ferry combinations also run from Bangkok. The island has no airport.

Sairee Beach and Mae Haad have ATMs, pharmacies, and a good range of restaurants and shops. No cars, songthaews (shared pickups) and motorbike taxis. Scooter rental is common but the island's hills and narrow roads cause frequent accidents, treat with caution. Nearest hospital is in Koh Samui (~2 hr by ferry).
AIS and DTAC 4G coverage on most of the island. WiFi universally available at dive shops, guesthouses, and restaurants. Thai SIMs are very cheap ($5–10 for a month of data).
Nearest hyperbaric chamber is in Koh Samui, evacuation takes 2+ hours. Dive conservatively. The main non-diving risk is motorbike accidents; many divers rent scooters without experience on unfamiliar roads. Party-related dehydration significantly raises DCS risk the next day. Enforce your own surface interval from alcohol the night before diving.
Jan–Apr is the peak dive season; the island is busy but not overwhelming. Book OW courses 1–2 weeks ahead in Jan–Mar. Oct–Nov sees returning visitors and a lively atmosphere. Jul–Aug has more European tourists but weather can be inconsistent for offshore pinnacles - Sail Rock in particular gets cancelled more frequently.
