Getting there

  • Fly to Koh Samui (USM, direct from Bangkok and Singapore) or Surat Thani (URT, main budget hub), then ferry to Koh Tao (2–3 hr from Surat Thani, 1.5 hr from Koh Phangan).
  • Night train from Bangkok to Chumphon + ferry is the classic budget option ($15–25 total).
  • Overnight bus + ferry combinations also run from Bangkok.
  • The island has no airport.

Open Water minimum; no special cert needed for any standard site. This is one of the world's most popular learn-to-dive destinations. PADI OW courses $250–350 (among the world's most competitive prices). Nearest hyperbaric chamber is in Koh Samui (~2 hr by ferry + ambulance).

Getting there

  • Fast boat from Bali (Padang Bai or Amed, ~2 hr) or from Lombok (Bangsal harbour, 15 min by public boat or 30 min by fast boat).
  • The three islands.
  • Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, Gili Meno Have their own docks.
  • No cars or motorbikes on any island, horse carts and bicycles only.

Good for your first trip if

Open Water minimum. No special certification needed for any standard site. One of Indonesia's most popular learn-to-dive destinations, with widely available, competitively priced PADI Open Water courses.

Know before you go

  • Relatively low-risk diving, no strong thermoclines, manageable currents, warm water.
  • The main risk is surface currents between the islands catching snorkellers out, stick close to the reef.
  • Nearest recompression chambers are in Bali and Mataram (Lombok).
  • Most dive shops carry oxygen.
  • No serious medical facilities on any island; evacuation to Lombok takes 45 min.

Bonaire National Marine Park

Getting there

  • Fly to Flamingo Airport (BON), direct connections from Amsterdam (KLM year-round), Miami, Houston, Atlanta, and New York.
  • No transit through Curacao or Aruba needed for most North American and European travellers.
  • The airport is small; arrivals are fast and relaxed.
  • Rent a car or pickup truck for shore diving independence, a truck with a tank rack is the classic Bonaire dive setup.

Minimum stay

4 nights (7+ for serious shore divers)

Open Water minimum; no special cert needed for any standard site. Bonaire is ideal for newly-certified divers building confidence and log book dives. A Bonaire National Marine Park permit ($45 USD/year) is required for all divers, purchased on arrival at customs or at any dive shop. Nearest hyperbaric chamber is in Curacao (~30 min by small aircraft).

Cozumel Reef National Park

Getting there

  • Fly direct to Cozumel International Airport (CZM), direct connections from major US cities (Houston, Dallas, Miami, Chicago) and via Cancun.
  • Alternatively: fly to Cancun (CUN), bus or colectivo to Playa del Carmen (1 hr, ~$5), then ferry to Cozumel (45 min, ~$18 each way).
  • Ferries run every 1–2 hours until 10 pm.
  • On the island, taxis and scooter rental cover all the ground you need, the island is flat and roads are good.

Good for your first trip if

Open Water minimum for most sites. Advanced OW recommended for Punta Sur, Maracaibo, and deep Colombia dives (strong current, depth). The island has a hyperbaric chamber (Buceo Medico Mexicano, staffed 24/7), a major safety advantage over most dive destinations. All boats must dive with certified guides inside the Marine Park. A park fee (~$3–5 USD/day per diver) applies, usually included in your package.

Know before you go

  • One of the safest dive destinations logistically, on-island hyperbaric chamber, mandatory certified guides in the Marine Park, and all boats carry oxygen.
  • Main risks are depth temptation on the deep walls and current surprises at Punta Sur and Maracaibo.
  • Tap water is not drinkable; use filtered or bottled water.
  • Bring mosquito repellent for evenings.

Sail Rock

Should I book my course before arriving or in person?

Both work in these destinations: dive schools are plentiful enough that walk-in booking is realistic in Koh Tao, Gili Islands, and Cozumel. Bonaire has fewer operators, so booking ahead is safer if you have specific dates.
