The Red Sea's best-known trips cost much more than a normal boat day, and the gap is easy to underestimate. Red Sea Diving School lists a standard two-dive reef day at EUR 45, and prices the SS Thistlegorm at EUR 250, about 5.6 times as much.     Red Sea Diving School lists a Full Day Boat Trip (2 dives) at EUR 45, a Dolphin House dive (2 dives, a 9-hour day trip) at EUR 110, the Salem Express Wreck (2 dives, near Safaga) at EUR 120, a Wrecks Tour (2 dives) at EUR 130 and the SS Thistlegorm (2 dives) at EUR 250, the last run on request rather than as a scheduled daily trip. Equipment rental is EUR 15 a day extra across these trips. Diamond Red Sea lists a Wreck Diving Add-On at EUR 65, with equipment rental at EUR 10 a day, fins and boots at EUR 5 and a computer at EUR 5 extra.

Getting there

  • Fly to Sharm el-Sheikh (SSH) on the Sinai Peninsula, or Hurghada (HRG) on the mainland - both have direct charter and scheduled flights from Europe.
  • Marsa Alam (RMF) serves the south.
  • Dahab is reached by bus or taxi from Sharm (1.5 hr).
  • Each base has a distinct character, choose it before you book accommodation.
  • Check current government travel advisories for the Sinai region before travelling.

Minimum stay

4 nights (7+ for liveaboards to far sites)

Good for your first trip if

Open Water minimum for most sites. Advanced OW recommended for Ras Mohammed and liveaboard itineraries (current, depth). Thistlegorm is manageable for OW divers with a guide; interior penetration is Advanced. Hyperbaric chambers in Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada. Dahab's Blue Hole is dangerous, never attempt the Arch (56 m) without full technical training.

Know before you go

  • Well-equipped hyperbaric facilities in Sharm and Hurghada.
  • Dahab's Blue Hole has a disproportionate accident record, never push depth here, and avoid the Arch without full technical training.
  • Currents at Ras Mohammed and the Brothers can be unpredictable.
  • Drink only bottled water.
  • Sun protection on surface intervals is critical in summer months.
