One of the most pristine and protected marine environments on Earth, set in a landscape of mushroom-shaped limestone islands draped in jungle. Koror is a small town with decent infrastructure; all diving is by boat from there. Palau moves at its own pace, it demands effort to reach, and rewards that effort completely. The Palau Pledge signed at the airport sets the tone: this is a place that takes its own conservation seriously.

Palau has been a shark sanctuary since 2009, no fishing, no finning, and the results are visible on every dive. Blue Corner concentrates grey reef sharks, whitetip reef sharks, and Napoleon wrasse in current-swept aggregations that can number in the hundreds. The German Channel draws manta rays to a cleaning station visited for decades. Jellyfish Lake holds millions of golden jellyfish that have lost their sting through evolution, swimming through them is one of diving's most surreal experiences. WWII wreck sites add an entirely different dimension.

Marine lake with millions of non-stinging golden jellyfish migrating daily with the sun. Scuba prohibited, snorkel through the pulsing mass for one of the world's most unique wildlife experiences.

Four vertical shafts descending into a cathedral cavern at 30 m, with light beaming through the openings. Sharks visible in open blue beyond the exit. One of diving's great visual experiences.

Palau's most powerful current site, the open Pacific pushes through the reef tip and concentrates an extraordinary volume of pelagic life. For experienced drift divers who know what they're doing.
Fly to Roman Tmetuchl International Airport (ROR), Koror, connections via Guam, Tokyo (Narita), Manila, and Taipei. No direct flights from Europe or the US mainland; most visitors transit Tokyo or Guam. Allow time for connections. Palau is genuinely remote. The airport is on Babeldaob island; Koror is connected by bridge (15 min drive).

Koror is a functional small city. ATMs (USD is the official currency), supermarkets, a hospital, and decent accommodation. Outside Koror, facilities are minimal. Power is reliable in Koror; water is drinkable there (check elsewhere). Most dive operators are based on the waterfront near the main boat dock.
4G coverage in Koror and surrounding areas via Palau Telecoms. WiFi at most hotels and dive shops. Remote dive sites and outer islands have no signal. An international SIM or local Palauan SIM is recommended; some US carriers roam here.

Blue Corner's current is the main risk, never dive it without current hook experience and a guide who knows the site. The Palau Pledge is legally binding; coral-touching violations carry fines. Nov–Apr books out fast, particularly Christmas/New Year and February half-term. Good guesthouses near the waterfront fill 2–3 months ahead. Wet season (Jun–Sep) is cheaper and quieter but some sites are weather-dependent. The Jellyfish Lake permit ($100/person) applies year-round.
